The Hackney Foodbank

The Hackney Foodbank

St Peter's Hall Office, 56 Warner Place, London ,
How a foodbank works Food is donated: Schools, churches, businesses and individuals donate non-perishable, in-date food to the Hackney foodbank. All food given out by the Hackney foodbank is donated. ‘Supermarket Collections’ are one of the main ways that food is donated. These are held at supermarkets where volunteers give shoppers a ‘foodbank shopping list’ and ask them to buy an extra item or two for local people in crisis. Food is sorted and stored: Volunteers sort food to check that it’s in date, ready to be given to people in need. Frontline care professionals identify people in need: Care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, CAB and police identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher. Clients receive food: Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a cup of tea and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem.

Hammersmith & Fulham Community Safety Board

Hammersmith & Fulham Community Safety Board

Britannia House 11 Glenthorne Road Hammersmith, London ,
Since 2005 the Hammersmith & Fulham Community Safety Board has provided a voice for the voiceless working with communities that have been identified through local consultation for their vulnerability providing platforms that provide local answers to local problems and sustainable change. The HF CSB is a very small charity that provides independence and expertise largely thanks to its Trustees and dedicated team of volunteers. ‘…to promote community safety by providing a forum for information flow in all directions between the police, local authority, partnerships and the local community, our membership is comprised of representatives from the local community and in particular those who are otherwise marginalised…’ Year after year the need for our work is evidenced through engagement at public meetings and outreach but now we recognise the need to expand into other areas developing models of good practice that can be replicated and implemented easily by the people most in need. HFCSB has worked directly with people who are at the margins of society for 5 years, building stronger communities by ‘bringing all partners together to create consensus for action, ‘and is embedded in and has developed out of its community by ‘sharing and shaping information, allowing people to make informed choices.’ The HF CSB has a board of 10 Trustees representing local communities that are marginalised .High levels of user involvement is ensured through regular public meetings ,workshops and outreach activities. In December 2010 a Business Plan was written covering 2011-13 incorporating its 3 core engagement groups; Young People, Older People and people affected by Anti Social Behaviour.
