EFA London (English for Action)

EFA London (English for Action)

St. Margaret's House, 21 Old Ford Rd, Bethnal Green, London ,
What is EFA London (English for Action)? We work in partnership with local organisations to set up ESOL and literacy courses in venues which are accessible and at the heart of the communities in which we work, such as workplaces, faith institutions, schools and community centres. Continuity is important to the work we do and we are committed to the areas where we work. Our classroom is a place where people are valued, listened to, supported and have an active involvement in the content of their classes. Our pedagogy is inspired by Paulo Freire and the work of Action Aid's Reflect ESOL Project. We see education as a tool for social change: learners are encouraged to share their experiences with the group, and critical thinking and dialogue are valued. Our courses cover more than just English language: they offer training and advice relating to everyday difficulties faced by our learners. By building group trust, confidence and ownership of the course, participants learn to use our classes as a space where they can discuss and tackle problems affecting their lives and their communities. We believe that improved language skills enable migrants to put more into, and get more out of, life in London. EFA London exists to equip people to effect positive change in their homes, communities and workplaces. History EFA London was launched in 2006. The first lesson took place at the London School of Economics on September 28th to students from the London Citizens Workers Association. The project was inspired by a similar scheme piloted by Camille Makunganya and London CITIZENS in 2005, who successfully taught English in Deptford to members of Our Lady’s Church.
Keep King Edward Park Green

Keep King Edward Park Green

Tower Hamlets, London ,
Save KEMP (King Edward Memorial Park) is a community action group based in Tower Hamlets, east London, fighting to save the only park left in our part of the borough from destruction by Thames Water. Our Park has been earmarked as a construction site for the London Super Sewer proposed by Thames Water to tackle the problem of raw sewage entering the river in case of heavy rain. Our campaign supports the need for cleaning up the river but strongly and wholeheartedly objects to the use of our Park as a construction site. A viable brownfield site alternative has been identified by Thames Water. There is no need to destroy KEMP to clean the Thames.

Igreja Urbana

Igreja Urbana

116 Bramley Road London , London ,
Vision "A missional community of faith, love and hope centered in the kingdom of God" We are a Kingdom Centered ministries and for that we want to be a cozy community, that by its way of living fall into the grace of people, a “church” with no preconception of any kind nor barriers, that in a warm relationship live in an atmosphere of harmony, love and joy – receiving the new Christian as well the unchristian with happiness. For that we would like to be connected with our time, I mean, “plugged into the world”, so we can carry the message of the gospel in an effective way. In order to do that with need to get to know it through relationships, if we really want to reach them, sharing God’s love in a contextualized way. (1Corinthians 9:22)Growing in fellowship with God and with your neighbor, through the power of the holy Spirit.
Brixton Come Together

Brixton Come Together

St Matthew's Church, Brixton Hill, London ,
"the inaugural Brixton Come Together Festival was a small, friendly, positive community event that is hopefully to be repeated. There were a few food and charity and environmentalist stalls including Brixton Green and several hundred in the crowd. The spendidly named La Troba Kung Fu, a band of Catalan rebels from the barrios of Barcelona, played amestizaje of infernal cumbia, reggae and rumba which warmed up the audience nicely" " Review of last year's Festival by Peter Culshaw on theartsdesk.com (author of Clandestino: In Search of Manu Chao") on theartsdesk.
