Tustin Estate

Tustin Estate

Tustin Estate, Old Kent Road, London ,
Tustin Estate was built in the mid 1960s, at the very end of the Old Kent Road and Ilderton Road, in South East London. It comprised of three tower blocks, Ambleside Point, Grasmere Point and Windermere Point, with underground parking, two storied Bowness House maisonettes above the shops, three storied maisonettes of Heversham House, Hillbeck Close old people’s home, Kentmere House flats, Manor Grove houses with gardens, Pilgrim’s Way primary school, Tustin Youth Club, all set around rolling greens and pathways, with The Penn playground in the middle. It was one of the greenest housing estates in London. Tustin was a self contained community, where kids could grow up on the estate, but off the streets. Where pet cats and dogs ran free. And children played out in safety. Where young children went to school without leaving the estate, whilst many Mum’s worked across the road, in the industrial streets opposite Manor Grove. Opposite was the Regal cinema, with the Astoria cinema within easy walking distance. Canals and bombsites were on the doorstep. Factory roofs, garages, and the gasworks were our climbing frames on the weekend. Even the odd tree house, at the back of Hillbeck Close. A pub on every corner, and Millwall Football Club was literally across the road. Tustin was unique – so much so that kids from other estates would come to hang out on the Tustin; especially the Tustin Club.
Ashburton Grove

Ashburton Grove

Ashburton Grove, known for sponsorship reasons as the Emirates Stadium or simply The Emirates, is an association football stadium located in Islington, North London, England and the home of Arsenal. At a capacity of 60,361, the Emirates is the third-largest football stadium in England after Wembley and Old Trafford and fourth-largest in the United Kingdom. In 1997, Arsenal started exploring the possibility of relocating to a new stadium, having been denied planning permission by Islington Council to expand its then home ground of Highbury. After considering various options, the club settled on purchasing an industrial and waste disposal estate in Ashburton Grove and submitted their planning brief to the public in 2000. In spite of opposition to the move by local residents and club shareholders, Arsenal succeeded in winning the council's approval to which manager Arsène Wenger later described as being the "biggest decision in Arsenal's history" since the board opted to bring Herbert Chapman to the club in 1925. Estate relocation work began in August 2002 and commenced four months later. Financing for the stadium proved difficult, resulting in the club delaying work until February 2004. Emirates Airline was later announced as the main sponsor for the stadium in October 2004 and work reached completion in July 2006 at a cost of £390 million.

Beckton railway station

Beckton railway station

Beckton railway station was a railway station in Beckton, London originally owned by the Gas Light and Coke Company, to serve the recently-built Beckton Gas Works. The line was opened for freight in 1872 and to passengers in 1873. It was leased to the Great Eastern Railway from 1874.Beckton was the only station on the Beckton branch of the railway, which left the EC&TJR at Custom House, heading initially east by north-east before levelling out to due east once it crossed what is today the Woolwich Manor Way. The station shut to passengers in 1940 after bombing in the Blitz cut it off from the rest of the network. Passenger services were not resumed when the line reopened as by now the works was better served by bus services using the Barking by-pass. The branch survived as a freight line, with the last trainload of pitch from the works leaving in December 1970.Today, most of the line to Beckton has been taken up and is now a public footpath, known as the "Beckton Corridor". A short stretch of the line east of Woolwich Manor Way has been reused as the final part of the Beckton branch of the Docklands Light Railway. Beckton DLR station is located several hundred yards west of Beckton railway station; "eastbound" trains from Gallions Reach loop back round over the old line in the reverse direction, entering the station from the east.

In 1965 it was abolished and merged into the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.OriginsUntil 1743 Bethnal Green formed a hamlet within the large parish of Stepney. By the 17th century the settlement had achieved a measure of self government, with its own overseer, constable and beadle. It remained a rural area until the beginning of the 18th century, when the expansion of suburban London saw the development of the Brick Lane area in the south west of the hamlet. The population rapidly increased and in 1743 an act of parliament constituted Bethnal Green as a separate parish.
