Pangbourne Canoe Club

Pangbourne Canoe Club

Whitchurch Road, Pangbourne ,
We train on Saturday mornings, following a varied training programme throughout the Year mainly dependant on the weather! We like to welcome New Members, and encourage those interested to join the ‘Intro to marathon paddling’ courses held in the summer. Over the 4 week course you will learn the basics of paddling technique and safety on the water and then be invited to join us in our training sessions.....to find out more about the course and how to join the club see our New Members page. Although our training is geared to competing, it is not compulsory to do so, but many find that they are bitten by the racing bug! Juniors begin in the Lightning class, U10 and U12 Girls and Boys before moving into the divisional system where all begin in Div 9. Promotions follow races and once in Div 6 the distance moves from 4 miles to 8, and again at Div 3 to 12 miles. Pangbourne CC competes in the Southern region of The Hasler Trophy, a national inter-club competition. The races are held from May to October and take place at different locations, on rivers and canals. It is also possible to race in out-of-region events, although the points do not count towards the results of the regional section. The top clubs in each region then go forward to the Hasler Finals, held in the Autumn at a different venue around the country each year. For more information why not browse the competitions menu at the top of this page. We regularly have members taking part in the Waterside Series which is held on the Kennet and Avon Canal, the Thameside pair of races. This is a run up to paddling in the Devizes to Westminster Canoe race which is held over the Easter weekend. We have an ever increasing in number junior section, many of whom paddle in other boat disciplines too, ably supported by a senior group, of coaches and volunteers, all crb checked

Path Hill Outdoors

Path Hill Outdoors

Path Hill Outdoors, Path Hill Farm, Path Hill, Pangbourne ,
We're a small organisation with a dedicated, experienced staff team, based on a converted farm within beautiful beech woods, close to the River Thames. Our Approach on Our Re-engagement Programmes: We think that when people have opportunities to take responsibility, to be treated with respect and to have their feelings supported and their frustrations attended to, then they can learn effectively. In working with young people, instead of using punishment or extrinsic reward systems, we use non-aversive strategies, understanding why a young person is behaving in challenging ways, and teaching them more appropriate ways to meet their needs. Why We Work with Young People: Government figures show a surge in the number of 16-18 year olds not in school, college or work in England. The social effects of this are enormous. Compared to national averages, truants and excluded children are 3 times more likely to develop a mental illness, and more than twice as likely to commit crimes and take drugs. The direct financial implications of disengagement are monumental. The average persistent truant costs society £44,000 and the total costs of persistent truants is £800 million per annum. Children with complex needs or who have difficulty accessing the curriculum, often fall outside of the current sphere of state school provision. With nobody taking responsibility for these young people, Path Hill Outdoors offers that role.

Hall of Sound

Hall of Sound

Pangbourne Road, Pangbourne ,
Part of the central idea of the Hall of Sound is that it should be as musically diverse as possible... like a cross between an “acoustic open mic” and WOMAD! We’ve already had performers younger than 8 and older than 80 and our “Welcome” mat is so big we can’t actually use it because it has to be stored in an aircraft hanger. All the money we raise goes to help with the upkeep of the Village Hall itself and no one gets paid a penny for doing it; we just do it for the fun and because we like live music. 11 months out of 12, it’s a completely acoustic event – no one uses microphones – and then, in December, we do an electric party special. In terms of what kinds of music we like, we encourage anything from; Black Eyed Peas to Black Dyke Mills Band / Chopin to Cheryl Cole / New York Dolls to New Directions... Most performers are fairly local, but we’ve had people fly in from Europe and North America and we don’t turn anyone away! Usually, it’s on the last Friday of every month, and it’s just £4 to get in (£2 concessions).
