Colchester Brewery

Colchester Brewery

Viaduct Brewhouse Unit 16 Wakes Hall Business Centre, Colchester ,
We have been busy creating a brewhouse from a converted Dutch Barn on the Wakes Hall Business Centre. Our first brew will be called No 1 for obvious reasons, and will be ready for release in January! It will be our intention to brew four permanent ales, and there will also be a selection of seasonal beers, although these will come along a little later. The beers will be sold through pubs within a forty mile radius of the brewery. We will be posting the whereabouts of these pubs in good time to allow visitors to this site to plan an early tasting! It is also our intention to have a shop in the brewery, where customers can buy beer for taking home.

It is situated just south of Lexden Road (A1124) in the west of Colchester near Essex County Hospital. The Colchester Garrison is not far to the south. The school has around 700 pupils aged 11–18, with girls admitted in the two upper years only. The school features extensive gardens, incorporating Gurney Benham House (named for a former Mayor of Colchester) and Elyanore House, as well as playing fields in Lexden. The school is officially a specialist science school, and has recently built a new chemistry block. In April 2009, CRGS was awarded specialist status for language.AcademicThe school has achieved high results, coming first in the A-level league tables every year since the 2006 results. The school is also successful at GCSE level. In 2004, it was named as the top state school in the country by the BBC. Headmaster Ken Jenkinson has explained this success by saying that "although as a grammar school the academic success of our students is our principal priority, I tend to see the results as the by-product of an ethos where we encourage students to aim high in all that they do and approach challenges with confidence."

Colchester Operatic Society

Colchester Operatic Society

We are one of the region's oldest musical theatre companies and perform annually to rave reviews. Founded in 1924, the Society has gone from strength to strength and boasts a membership of over 150 people. We currently produce two main shows a year - one two-week run in the early year by our members aged 16 and over, and another one-week run by our junior members aged 11 - 23. In addition, we also perform our annual spring concert at a variety of venues throughout Colchester. We are also often in demand at smaller functions such as fundraising events, carol singing and one off performances. As well as a strong COS membership, our junior members group, known collectively as 'CO2' (Colchester Operatic Society Second Edition) is incredibly popular and the Society prides itself on the number of young people who have gone on from CO2, through COS and on to form successful careers within the theatrical industry. Many of these are currently performing on West End stages and on your TV screens! Nevertheless, the dream of a future career in theatre is not a pre-requisite for joining the Society - for many of our members it is being part of an exciting theatrical project that interests them. Whether your forte is acting, dancing, singing or assisting in other aspects of the production, there is something for you in COS. Whatever your age and ability, Colchester Operatic Society offers challenging, rewarding and above all FUN activities for individuals, couples and entire families in Colchester, with an emphasis on musical theatre.
