Zone Golf Charity Shoot Out

Zone Golf Charity Shoot Out

Dukes meadows Par 3 Golf Course, Chiswick ,
Bank Holiday Monday, 27th May will see 3,500 golfing fans descend upon Dukes Meadows in Chiswick for the ultimate family day out. The golfing super-stars will battle it out in the new version of the game to win £250,000 for charities of their choice. Each of the Pros will be helped to victory by celebrity team mates, with the line up including former British Tennis No.1 Tim Henman and football hero Jamie Redknapp. Popular UK TV presenter Vernon Kay will play host at the event. THE RULES Zone Golf is a colourful, Par 3 game, with a twist, which is set to revolutionise golf and be the sport’s version of 20/20 cricket. The game is played over 9 holes, which through its fast-paced strategic nature, offers an extremely exciting alternative to ‘normal’ golf. Each Par 3 green is divided into three coloured “zones” with a hole and flag in each zone (green-easy, amber-medium, red-hard). Each player/team must nominate a zone on the tee and subsequently hit that zone to acquire the relevant points (green-3, amber-6 and red-9). Additional points are available for Bogey-1, Par-2, Birdie-3, Eagle-4 (Hole in One). Spectator and player excitement is rocketed by the introduction of a “do or die” situation on every tee. The player/team with the most points after nine holes wins. There are three Zone Golf formats that can be played: “POINTSPLAY” “BATTLE” “TEAM BATTLE” When playing “POINTSPLAY” each player simply adds their accumulative points total from zones hit with additional points gained from bogeys, pars, birdies and eagles (Hole in Ones). This game can be played over 9,18,27 or 36 holes. (9 Par 3 holes constitute one round of Zone Golf). Over any of these hole durations, the player with the highest points total wins. Any tied scores at conclusion of play are decided by a sudden death playoff. When playing “BATTLE” two individuals go head to head. If an individual is trailing by an insurmountable points deficit on the 9th tee, the match can still be won by choosing to activate the “steal” rule. This rule states that if the trailing individual makes a hole in one in the red zone they “steal” the match. This can only be countered if the leading player matches this feat. In the case of a match being tied the winner will be decided by a sudden death playoff. When playing “TEAM BATTLE”, which is a fourball game, teams of two go head to head. Both team members must play to the same nominated zone, adding their individual scores together creating the team score. If a team is trailing by an insurmountable points deficit on the 9th tee, the match can still be won by choosing to activate the “team steal” rule. This rules states that if either, one player makes a hole in one in the red zone, or both players hit the nominated red zone and make birdie two’s they “team steal” the match. This can only be countered if the leading team match either of these feats. In all cases a 9th hole, red zone hole in one takes precedence. In the case of a match being tied the winning team will be decided by a sudden death playoff. The “TEAM BATTLE” format will be used for The Zone Golf Charity Shoot Out. This eliminates any potential anti-climatic situation as the “TEAM STEAL” rule guarantees a £100,000 shot on the final hole.

Rock and Road Alva Duathlon - Wednesday 22nd May

Ochil Leisure Centre, Queen Street, Alva ,
Scotland’s rugged terrain make it very well placed to deliver any fantastic off-road sports event and in Clackmannanshire we have the perfect location for a mid-week event. The race is designed so that first time off-road racers can get involved knowing they will complete a fun but tough course whilst still providing a good challenge for the more experienced racer. As well as this, it is mid-week (Wednesday evening) so you can go into work on Thursday with tales of the off-road fun you've had! Alva’s location makes it within easy reach of much of the Central Belt so no need to take the afternoon off. The first run will take you up to the foot of Silver Glen before dropping down again to Woodland Park and returning to transition. Once on the bike, you will head back up to Woodland Park and continue towards Tillicoultry. Once you reach Tillicoultry, you’ll wind your way round the back of village and then continue along the open hillside and across to some fun and more technical sections. A short (ish) sharp climb will take you back onto the open hillside as you make your way back to the Woodland Park via some fun swooping trails and a couple of steeper challenges. The last leg is the reverse of the first but takes the singletrack trail but the road up the Woodpark Park instead of the hill (phew!). It’s mountain bikes only for this race and in any case cross bikes wouldn’t really be suitable. We’ll leave tyre choice up to you. The course goes over a wide range of terrain which can vary depending on weather conditions. Although there will be marshalls on some sections of all the course, we strongly recommend a recce, especially the mountain bike section. Remember, it’s your responsibility to know the course!! We will have a Facebook page up soon with more details on the race and there will also be more info, including maps of the course, shortly on www.ochilleisureenterprises.org.uk All registrations, transitions, starts and finishes are located at the Ochils Leisure Centre. There is a goody bag for all entrants from the main event sponsor Rock and Road Cycles from Bridge of Allan, as well as prizes for 1st,2nd,3rd overall and 1st in each category (no competitor can win more than one prize). There is also a prize for first local (FK12 postcode). This is a pilot event with spaces limited to 60 so spaces are likely to go quickly. Colne Valley Mountain Bike Challenge

Colne Valley Mountain Bike Challenge

Leymoor Cricket Club, Parkwood Road, Golcar, Huddersfield ,
Since the event’s first inception in 2004 we have striven to adapt our route to try and incorporate as much legal off-road riding as we possibly can. Over the intervening years our commitment has paid off handsomely as we have continued to develop the route and have secured access to several additional sections. These sections provide some added variety for our returning participants and complement the rest of the route nicely. As a bonus, one of the original, evil tarmac climbs has bitten the dust! The 30 mile route is a mixture of demanding off road terrain, local roads and lanes, set around the picturesque, post-industrial countryside of the Colne Valley in Huddersfield. The course travels through the heart of the “Last of the Summer Wine” and “Where the Heart Is” country. The event is open to anyone aged 12 or over, however under 16′s must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult. Riders of all abilities are welcomed, but are reminded that although this is primarily a fun event, the course is challenging. This is a fundraising event in support of the 39th Parkwood Scout Group and Leymoor Cricket Club, Golcar.

Eglinton Horse Trials, Barskimming

Eglinton Horse Trials, Barskimming

Barskimming, Mauchline ,
The Eglinton Horse Trials – A Potted History! (Heather Galbraith- Organsier) We moved from Glasgow and moved to Auchendrane in Ayrshire when I was years old; this is when my association with horses began. My sister had a Shetland pony called Prince alias “The Black Devil” he was the 1st pony I rode and during the years I fell off him 77 times! But he redeemed himself by winning the Pony Gallop at Ayr Show in 1938, which was the first show that I rode at. During the war my four eldest brothers, sister and father served in the navy, my younger brother was away at school and I had free reign of three ponies (Peter, Prince and Gypsy) and three horses (Silver, Rema and Netware) and no matter what I did with them they seemed to enjoy it and always looked after me! Now in my teens I was sent off to boarding school at Downe House, Berkshire and horses took a back seat. Four years later in 1948 I spent year in London and was lucky enough to see our Olympic riders performing dressage at the Richmond Horse Show. London gave place to Edinburgh where I worked as Physiotherapist at the Royal Infirmary and discovered Redford Barracks, escaping to their Riding School at the weekends. I discovered that one of the Doctors, Paul Heywood was schooling at the Barracks with the view of competing at Harewood 3-day event and being instructed by a soldier from the Scot’s Greys Regiment (Charlie Moffat) just returned from Germany. This sparked my enthusiasm for eventing. Just around this time I fell heir to Amrak previously bred by my sister but owned by my younger brother who was to busy farming to ride. As I was now working at Ballochmyle Hospital and living at Barskimming I was able to ride more seriously, together Amrak and I progressed through the grades eventually competing at Harewood and Badminton. Always on the outlook for new venues for events Bill Thompson who at that time was “Horse Trials” (building and designing Harewood and then Burghley) approached me, and asked if I would consider running a Horse Trials at Barskimming. My father kindly agreed and on 11th April 1959 the first and last ever committee meeting was held. In those days most events were associated with the local Hunt so the Masters agreed I should use the name Eglinton. It was with great excitement that during that glorious summer with the help direction and encouragement of Bill Thompson the course was designed and constructed entirely by him. September the 15th was the date of the first Eglinton Horse Trials and we had 32 entries divided into 2 classes. One for the locals and one for more experienced riders, some of whom progressed to compete in 3-day events. In the second year we introduced an Open (Advanced) class which was won by Brigadier Bolton who had represented Britain in the 1948 Olympics and was one of the riders had been lucky enough to see ride whilst in London. Other notable winner’s in earlier years are Sheila Wilcox, Judy Bradwell, Jen Caley (who has also been scorer here) and David Goldie, for many years my Chief Steward. The Trials developed over the years and linked with Annick Horse Trials, Irvine and Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire to become a much-enjoyed part of the Scottish circuit, renowned for the party atmosphere. Later with the disappearance of Annick and Lockerbie, Rowallan was added for a time and then Auchinleck and the party continued! One of the most exciting moments whilst opening the entries was to find one from Princess Anne and Capt. Mark Phillips, I remember that in her honour of her visit we put tarmac on some of the Avenue, and my most distinguished owner was HRH The Queen, whose horse Columbus won in 1974. The trials have been well supported by Scottish British Team Members: Ian Stark, Lorna Clark and Annelie Drumond Hay, Ruth Edge and many others including Olympic Team members: Mary King , William Fox Pitt. The late Polly Phillips (former British Team member) also won the Advanced Class twice, and her husband Vere presents a trophy annually in her memory. It should be noted that Vere and Coral Cove, as well as winning the Advanced Class in 2003, won this prize two years in a row. Other top riders have included Pippa Funnell, who fell off in the water 3 times (Ian Stark managed to fall in the water once!) Gary Parsonage, Christopher Bartle, Rachel Bayliss, Nigel Taylor, Tiny Clapham, Karen Dixon, Ollie Townend; who went home with a lorry load of silver and the Polly Phillips Memorial prize) and Caroline Powell. The entire Lochore Family, the Tullochs, Les Smith, David Gatherer and my great niece Emily Galbraith have represented the top Scottish riders. As the sport has progressed so have the different levels of competition: we now run from BE90 to Advanced and the rules and regulations are much stricter. In 1959 we had one Doctor, the Red Cross and the Vet “on call” we now have 2 fully equipped paramedic ambulances, specially trained Doctors and Vets and a Horse Ambulance with trained assistants on site, Central Control, radio’s and lots of Officials from British Eventing. Throughout the years we have been lucky to receive sponsorship from the Midland bank 1970-73, the Clydesdale Bank 1974-1982, Barratt housebuilders1983-86, Antartex part of the Edinburgh Woollen mill from 1987-1990, the Stirlingshire Saddlery in 1991 but from 1992 have relied on a number of generous individual Sponsors.
