Foundation Degree in Theatre Arts: Prop Making & Special Effects Course Length: 2 Years Site: West Durrington Campus Map Attendance: Full time Tutor: Dan Jenkins (This course is validated by the University of Brighton and delivered by Northbrook College) UCAS code: W490 The Course: This course focuses on the fabrication of props and special effects for the entertainment industry. It develops skills in design through research, creative workshops, illustration, CAD based systems and maquettes. Course Content: The manufacture of props involves skills in sculpture in various materials, moulding & casting, texture effects and finishing techniques. The course also explores model making for film, mask manufacture, puppetry and character effects. It is structured to offer an equal quantity of individual projects and production practice on a wide range of internal productions and external commissions. All students benefit from access to individual workstations, in-studio IT provision, the resource centre and extensive design workshops. Throughout your studies the cost of materials is fully funded on production practice. Work experience underpins the training into the second year of the course and opportunities are available to work across theatre, TV and film. Subject based research and analysis underpins the study of both years. Study hours are split between approximately one third scheduled learning (eg lectures, tutorials, practical classes and workshops) and two thirds guided independent study, which may include 3 weeks' work experience. Assessment: There are no written exams and you will be assessed through a combination of coursework and practical work (for more details, see the Programme Specification). Progression/Career : Past graduates have gone on to work as art department assistants, prop makers, model makers, set builders and scenic artists, or continued their education on the BA (Hons) top-up at Northbrook or progressed to other Higher Education establishments. Entry Requirements: Individual offers may vary. A minimum of 160 UCAS points from one of the following: BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in theatre production/fine art/product design A Levels - at least 140 points from A2 Levels (including a relevant subject) Foundation Studies Diploma in Art & Design/Media An equivalent overseas qualification together with a proven ability in spoken and written English (IELTS 6 overall) Alternative qualifications and industrial experience would be considered and discussed at interview.
