Wessex Sailing club is the official student sailing club at the University of Southampton. We welcome sailors of all abilities and have several divisions that are sure to meet your experience level and interests.
BEGINNERS SAILING
For those of you who have come to Southampton to try something completely new, why not take the RYA Level 1 Course and learn to sail with us at a heavily discounted price.
CASUAL SAILING
This section of the club allows you to get out on the water to improve your skills whilst sailing a variety of different boats, ranging from Laser Picos to 49ers. We run a session every week and normally alternate between beginner/ progression sessions and advanced / performance sailing afternoons. We also have the ability to co-run a variety of RYA courses throughout the year at a discounted price if there is enough demand. For more information, see our casual group here:

FLEET RACING
Many of our members have their own boats in Southampton and sail them regularly. Last year, a very strong team of 22 sailors in boats ranging from Fireflies to RS800's and Lasers represented University of Southampton in the BUSA Fleet Racing Nationals. We have an excellent record, winning medals in both the handicap and the Firefly fleet in recent years. Look out for more details posted on the page during October.
As of 2013 we have begun to encourage members to take part in Open Events that occur along Southampton Water and the surrounding area. These have included entries at the Weston Winter Warmer and Freezer Series.
Results, Photos and more information can be found on BUSA's website and on our wall.
TEAM RACING
At Southampton we have 4 mixed teams and 2 ladies teams that compete in events throughout the year with probably the most successful university sailing club in history, having won silver at the BUSA Team Racing Finals in 2007 and gold and bronze in 2008 and silver again in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The end of the 2012 season saw Southampton regain the championship title with SOTON 2 winning the gold and SOTON 1 bringing home the bronze. Congratulations!
We train every Wednesday afternoon at Spinnaker Club.
YACHTING
The yachting section is divided into cruising and racing sections which operate on alternate Wednesdays.
The cruising section allows members to go for an afternoon sail on the Solent and maybe have a meal on the Isle of Wight. Beginners are welcome. There are also opportunities to work towards the RYA qualifications in seamanship including day skipper and Yachtmaster.
The racing section is a chance for us to train our teams for the BUSA Yachting Nationals and Europeans, fine tuning skills in trimming and tactics. A lot of our members have gone on to be involved in the RYA Keelboat Program and Yacht Racing Academy.
We also have a lot of contacts with private yacht owners in the area, who are often looking for crew members to go out racing at weekends from the Hamble.
